Demonstrations is perhaps my most enigmatic work to date. In retrospect it seems that it was driven by the search for a pure and extreme form of listening without being obvious and obscene. This 'sensitive rawness' that I was looking for expressed itself in the use of extremities: hard cuts, ethereal drones and disastrous noise, early Renaissance polyphony and recent pop music as only sound materials (like in the Mille Plateaux album), musical history collapsing into abstract sounds. The four pieces are demonstrations as well as negotiations and meditations. Reduced to a rigid system of composing with only certain techniques and materials to position the work against the nihilistic permission of all sounds and styles. Closed to the outside world but open ended in itself, becoming an immanent infinity.
